Joan became involved in numerous local organisations, centred on Wallasey: these included the Union of Catholic Mothers, a Bible study class, the University of the Third Age, Wallasey Womens Institute, and the Association of Masonic Widows. She continued to be involved in Wallasey Inner Wheel, and became President again.
One distinct sadness was the sudden loss of her daughter-in-law in 2002; Joan was exceptionally supportive to her son over this. She was able to attend his second wedding in 2006.
Mum celebrated her 80th birthday at the Long Mynd Hotel, Church Stretton, with her family. This hotel would form the base for a short holiday with her son in November 2009, visiting various locations in Shropshire and Herefordshire.
