1986-1996

Without JPJB, Joan developed a different life: as she put it, following a very different road to the one that she had been travelling and expected to travel.

One area was holidays – she went to Sorrento with her son and his wife in the spring of 1987, but it was clear that this did not present a model that could be followed. As two children were born to her eldest daughter, she began to go on holidays with her family, including ones on her canal boat, Dudley No. 3. Perhaps the last family holiday – now with four grandchildren – was a short weekend in Llandudno in 1993.

While her formal studies had ended, she began to develop a “career” in Inner Wheel, but at a national level, being national Magazine Editor, and eventually Association President, in 1991-2. The Annual Conference at Bournemouth in 1992 was attended by all her children and their partners, and she addressed a very large audience. Later, she became Editor of the Magazine of International Inner Wheel, but her hopes to become IIW President were not fulfilled.
